Starting from 1962 Gaylord Nelson, an American Senator from Wisconsin, had been mulling over the idea of environmental pollution protection. It bothered him a lot that while the industrial and economic growth of many countries around the globe had reached amazing results, no one seemed to care about what it did to our environment. It wasn’t easy to find a good way to share the idea and to attract all like-minded out there to take action against the environmental destruction.
In the late sixties there were numerous anti-Vietnam War demonstrations. So, the Senator took the idea of huge grassroots protests from the American youth to attract the attention of citizens and the government to the environmental pollution and numerous disasters around the country and the world.
“At a conference in Seattle in September 1969, I announced that in the spring of 1970 there would be a nationwide grassroots demonstration on behalf of the environment and invited everyone to participate. The wire services carried the story from coast to coast. The response was electric. It took off like gangbusters. Telegrams, letters, and telephone inquiries poured in from all across the country. The American people finally had a forum to express its concern about what was happening to the land, rivers, lakes, and air – and they did so with spectacular exuberance.” (Gaylord Nelson, American Heritage Magazine, October 1993)
Today it is being coordinated by Earth Day Network. Thanks to the modern technologies this process has of course become super-fast and effective: television, Internet, cell phones. But we also forget that while these services make our life and communication easier, they also influence the environment. For instance, did you know that:
- Every second someone’s browsing a website approximately 20 milligrams of CO2 are being produced. But since you hardly get an answer from one search, a typical search session produces about the same amount of CO2 as does a boiling teapot.
- Google handles about 1 billion search queries per day, releasing about 200 tons of CO2.
- According to McAfee, the electricity used to transmit the trillions of spam sent over the course of one year is equivalent to the amount of electricity needed to power more than two million homes. At the same time the carbon output equates to that of three million cars.
- An average US household uses 10.6 mWh electricity per year.
- Google uses an estimated 15 billion kWh of electricity per year (more than most countries). However, Google generates a lot of their own power with their solar panels.
This year people all over the world celebrate Earth’s Day 45th anniversary in more than 190 countries. This day is about unity of hearts and minds in a symphony of love to our Mother Earth. People around the globe gather to celebrate its beauty and to support the groups who make the world a better place. It is not just about the environment – Earth Day has gained a deeper and more significant meaning to humankind. It has everything to do with all the issues and tragedies that are going on around the globe: dying animals, starving people, natural disaster consequences and so on and so forth. Unfortunately, we face a huge amount of eco problems, but more importantly we cause just as many.
